This route runs from northern Jiangsu through Lianyungang on the Yellow Sea, then follows a Panama Canal corridor whose draft limit depends on Gatun Lake; at the far end is the port of Shelburne.

Canadian clearance depends on eManifest data filed before loading and on the importer's CARM set-up. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

What we need to start

  • Lianyungang export
  • Break-bulk ESS guide
  • CARM account
  • Bilingual labels
  • eManifest cut-off

Route profile

What sets Lianyungang → Shelburne apart

Sea corridor

Asia – Americas via the Panama Canal

Gatun Lake levels set how much a ship can load through Panama; the Caribbean leg then crosses hurricane waters from June to November.

Import country

Canada

Canada checks the carrier's eManifest before loading, the importer's CARM security at release and, for consumer goods, bilingual labels.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Lianyungang → Shelburne route

They run from the Lianyungang terminal through the voyage to Shelburne and the Canada import file.

  1. Origin port

    Fog season at Lianyungang

Between April and July sea fog is a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, the China Meteorological Administration says. Lianyungang, like Qingdao, can see vessels held at anchor by fog, and moving a box to another vessel means amending its DG filings.

What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.

  2. Origin port

A shorter document list at Lianyungang, not a shorter check

Lianyungang MSA's Notice No. 1 of 2024 cut the materials for 'new three' cargo to four on the cargo side: the safe-carriage declaration, the inspector-signed packing certificate, the packaging inspection certificate where packaged, and a power of attorney. Fewer papers means each one carries more weight; the packing certificate still has to be signed by a certified inspector after supervised stuffing.

What Anxin does: We prepare the four cargo-side documents together and check that the packing certificate, the packaging certificate and the declaration describe the same UN numbers and quantities.

  3. Sea corridor

Hurricane season on the Caribbean side

The Atlantic hurricane season, covering the Caribbean and the Gulf of America, runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaking around 10 September, with an average of 14 named storms. Ports on the way to Shelburne close ahead of storms, and ships wait or divert.

What Anxin does: For August–October arrivals we build slack into delivery plans and pass the carrier's revised arrival straight to your consignee.

  4. Import country

eManifest: cargo data 24 hours before loading in Lianyungang

The CBSA requires marine carriers to transmit cargo and conveyance data for containers at least 24 hours before loading at the foreign port, including the estimated loading time. If the data are amended electronically before departure, the 24-hour count starts again from the CBSA's acknowledgement, so a late correction can push a box for Shelburne off its vessel.

What Anxin does: We send the carrier the final cargo description, UN number, weights and consignee details before the cut-off in Lianyungang and avoid amendments after the filing.

  5. Import country

    Nova Scotia's household battery stewardship

Nova Scotia requires producers of household batteries under 5 kg to run or join an approved stewardship program. Since 1 July 2024 brand owners fund and manage it, and retailers may not sell batteries from brand owners who are not in a program.

What Anxin does: For household batteries arriving at Shelburne for Nova Scotia retail, we ask whether the brand owner participates in the approved program before booking.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Lianyungang to Shelburne

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Lianyungang end

  • The four cargo-side documents under Lianyungang MSA Notice 2024 No. 1 prepared together and cross-checked
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Bilingual (English/French) retail labelling checked on artwork
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report

For the shipping line

  • Canal routing and any canal-related surcharge confirmed for the booked vessel
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards

At the Canada end

  • English DG documents with a 24-hour number for the Canadian road leg
  • Importer's CARM account and release-prior-to-payment security confirmed

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Lianyungang filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Canada before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Shelburne.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Lianyungang to Shelburne

At least 24 hours before loading in China. If the data are amended electronically before the ship sails, the 24 hours restart from the CBSA's acknowledgement.

1 June to 30 November, peaking around 10 September, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

Under its Notice No. 1 of 2024, the cargo side submits the DG safe-carriage declaration, the inspector-signed packing certificate, the packaging inspection certificate where the goods are packaged, and a power of attorney.
