From Lianyungang to Churchill, cargo moves from northern Jiangsu through Lianyungang on the Yellow Sea, crosses a long voyage ending in the North Atlantic or the Gulf of St Lawrence, and is discharged at the port of Churchill.

Canada adds an eManifest that closes 24 hours before loading and a CARM account that decides whether goods are released before duty is paid. Below are 6 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Fog season Apr–Jul
  • Lianyungang export
  • CARM account
  • Bilingual labels
  • eManifest cut-off

Where this route gets difficult

6 points to plan for on the Lianyungang → Churchill route

They run from the Lianyungang terminal through the voyage to Churchill and the Canada import file.

  1. Origin port

Yellow Sea fog from April to July

The China Meteorological Administration describes sea fog as a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, mainly from April to July. At Lianyungang, as at Qingdao, fog can hold vessels at anchor, and a changed vessel means amended DG filings.

What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.

  2. Origin port

Energy storage on break-bulk ships: Lianyungang's own rules

Lianyungang MSA's June 2025 guide for ESS on break-bulk ships treats ESS cabinets as UN3480 and ESS containers as UN3536, recommends a remaining charge of 20–50%, and requires converters and monitoring to be powered off, series and parallel circuits disconnected, packages evenly spread with a low centre of gravity, and a safety meeting before the ship arrives.

What Anxin does: For ESS units we confirm the UN number the unit ships under, get the state of charge and isolation steps in writing from the manufacturer, and join the pre-arrival safety meeting with the stowage details.

  3. Sea corridor

North Atlantic winter storms peak in January

NOAA's Ocean Prediction Center has recorded hurricane-force mid-latitude storms in the North Atlantic from October to April, most often in January. The final leg to Churchill crosses those waters.

What Anxin does: For winter sailings we check blocking and bracing on stuffing photos before sealing.

  4. Import country

IMDG papers work on the road leg, with Canadian conditions

TDG Regulations s. 9.3 let an international consignment move by road to or from Churchill under IMDG classification, marks, labels and documents. The shipping document must still be legible in English or French and show a 24-hour telephone number, and a container must carry placards under TDG Part 4 or the IMDG Code.

What Anxin does: We check that the DG declaration is in English, carries a 24-hour number that the consignee has arranged and matches the container's placards before the documents go to the Canadian trucker.

  5. Import country

eManifest: cargo data 24 hours before loading in Lianyungang

The CBSA requires marine carriers to transmit cargo and conveyance data for containers at least 24 hours before loading at the foreign port, including the estimated loading time. If the data are amended electronically before departure, the 24-hour count starts again from the CBSA's acknowledgement, so a late correction can push a box for Churchill off its vessel.

What Anxin does: We send the carrier the final cargo description, UN number, weights and consignee details before the cut-off in Lianyungang and avoid amendments after the filing.

  6. Import country

CARM: no posted security, no release before payment

The CBSA's CARM transition ended in May 2025. Importer accounts with dutiable goods that had not posted financial security were removed from release prior to payment, and they now pay duties and taxes at release. An importer new to Churchill has to settle this before the first container lands.

What Anxin does: At quotation we ask the Canada importer whether its CARM account has security posted for release prior to payment, so the broker's release plan is known before the ship arrives.

Before you book

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Lianyungang filings, the carrier booking and the Canada import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
