This route runs from northern Jiangsu through Lianyungang on the Yellow Sea, then follows a corridor into Atlantic Canada's waters; at the far end is the port of Botwood.

Canada adds an eManifest that closes 24 hours before loading and a CARM account that decides whether goods are released before duty is paid. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Lianyungang export
  • Break-bulk ESS guide
  • Bilingual labels
  • eManifest cut-off
  • CARM account

Route profile

The Lianyungang → Botwood route in brief

Origin port

Lianyungang

Jiangsu's Yellow Sea port, with a simplified document list for 'new three' cargo since 2024 and its own guide for energy-storage units on break-bulk ships.

Sea corridor

Asia – Atlantic Canada, the St Lawrence and the North Atlantic

The last leg crosses the North Atlantic or enters the Gulf of St Lawrence, with an icebreaking season from December to May and hurricane-force winter storms peaking in January.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Lianyungang → Botwood shipments get held up: 5 points

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Botwood and the Canada market.

  1. Origin port

A shorter document list at Lianyungang, not a shorter check

Lianyungang MSA's Notice No. 1 of 2024 cut the materials for 'new three' cargo to four on the cargo side: the safe-carriage declaration, the inspector-signed packing certificate, the packaging inspection certificate where packaged, and a power of attorney. Fewer papers means each one carries more weight; the packing certificate still has to be signed by a certified inspector after supervised stuffing.

What Anxin does: We prepare the four cargo-side documents together and check that the packing certificate, the packaging certificate and the declaration describe the same UN numbers and quantities.

  2. Origin port

Yellow Sea fog from April to July

The China Meteorological Administration describes sea fog as a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, mainly from April to July. At Lianyungang, as at Qingdao, fog can hold vessels at anchor, and a changed vessel means amended DG filings.

What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.

  3. Sea corridor

Panama draft or Suez routing decides the first half

Services to Botwood run either via Panama, where the Neopanamax draft depends on Gatun Lake (a planned cut was postponed in September 2026), or via Suez and the Mediterranean, where Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing the service uses and quote the options separately.

  4. Import country

eManifest: cargo data 24 hours before loading in Lianyungang

The CBSA requires marine carriers to transmit cargo and conveyance data for containers at least 24 hours before loading at the foreign port, including the estimated loading time. If the data are amended electronically before departure, the 24-hour count starts again from the CBSA's acknowledgement, so a late correction can push a box for Botwood off its vessel.

What Anxin does: We send the carrier the final cargo description, UN number, weights and consignee details before the cut-off in Lianyungang and avoid amendments after the filing.

  5. Import country

Release before payment needs security posted in CARM

Since the CARM transition ended on 20 May 2025, importers without financial security posted in the CARM Client Portal no longer get release prior to payment; they pay duties and taxes when the goods are released. For a first shipment through Botwood, that decides whether goods can leave the terminal before the duty is settled.

What Anxin does: At quotation we ask the Canada importer whether its CARM account has security posted for release prior to payment, so the broker's release plan is known before the ship arrives.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Lianyungang to Botwood

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

In Lianyungang, before the box is loaded

  • The four cargo-side documents under Lianyungang MSA Notice 2024 No. 1 prepared together and cross-checked
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Final cargo data with the carrier before the eManifest cut-off; no amendments after filing
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

At the Canada end

  • Importer's CARM account and release-prior-to-payment security confirmed
  • English DG documents with a 24-hour number for the Canadian road leg

Before you book

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Lianyungang filings, the carrier booking and the Canada import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Lianyungang to Botwood

Only if the importer is enrolled in release prior to payment with financial security posted in the CARM Client Portal. Since 20 May 2025, importers without security pay duties and taxes at release.
