Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

Europe · sea freight from Guangzhou
Guangzhou to Derry
South China Sea · Malacca Strait · Indian Ocean · Bab-el-Mandeb · Suez Canal · Strait of Gibraltar · Celtic Sea · Irish Sea
This route runs through Guangzhou's Nansha terminals, which since September 2026 accept Dongguan-inspected battery boxes without a second check, then follows a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service; at the far end is a port on the EU product-rules side of the Irish Sea.
On the UK side, customs runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service and producers report battery tonnage through the NPWD. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

Route profile
The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.
EU Battery Regulation rules in force in Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework, with CE marking (plus UK(NI) where a UK body assessed).

Where this route gets difficult
Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Derry and the United Kingdom market.
Since 22 September 2026 Guangzhou MSA accepts Dongguan MSA's factory inspection for boxes loading at Nansha and re-inspects only when necessary. The first container was stuffed in Dongguan that day and left Nansha for Singapore on 24 September. Because the arrangement is new at Nansha, the factory record needs to be correct the first time.
What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your Dongguan factory can use the Nansha one-box arrangement and make sure the stuffing photos, packing certificate and DG declaration match, because a mismatch is the 'necessary' case that brings the second inspection back.
Routing round Africa takes battery boxes past the Cape. The World Shipping Council counted 576 containers lost at sea in 2024, and the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates around 200 of them, about 35%, were lost near the Cape; in August 2024 SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in winter weather.
What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.
Northern Ireland follows the EU Battery Regulation under the Windsor Framework, and has since 18 February 2024, with the Batteries (Placing on the Market) (Northern Ireland) Regulations 2026 providing enforcement. Batteries sold there need the CE marking, plus the UK(NI) indication where a UK notified body did the assessment, so goods labelled only for Great Britain do not fit.
What Anxin does: We ask the importer whether the goods are for the Northern Ireland market and, if so, for the CE documentation from the manufacturer before loading.
UK battery producers register with the environmental regulator through the National Packaging Waste Database and report every year the tonnage and chemistry of the batteries they placed on the market. Distributors and retailers supplying more than 32 kg a year also have to offer free take-back of waste portable batteries.
What Anxin does: We give the UK importer the battery weight and chemistry for each shipment from our booking data, which it can use for its annual return; the registration itself stays with the producer.
Every import into the UK is declared in HMRC's Customs Declaration Service. The importer or its agent needs an EORI number starting with GB (XI in Northern Ireland) and a CDS subscription, which HMRC grants within 2 hours or up to 5 working days if it runs more checks, so a first-time importer should subscribe well before the ship reaches Derry.
What Anxin does: At booking we ask for the UK importer's EORI number and who will lodge the CDS declaration, and pass the commercial invoice, packing list and dangerous goods details to that agent before arrival.
More than a tonne of portable batteries a year puts a UK producer into a battery compliance scheme, which it must join by 15 October ahead of the compliance year and which then registers and reports on its behalf. Below that threshold the producer registers directly on the NPWD and reports tonnage and chemistry by 31 January.
What Anxin does: We ask the UK importer whether it is a large or small portable producer and which scheme covers it, and put battery weights per chemistry on the packing list.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Guangzhou filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second inspection at Nansha because factory records are incomplete | Dongguan factory → Nansha | Photos, packing certificate and declaration matched before trucking | Anxin |
| Heavy weather off South Africa | Cape of Good Hope | CINS stuffing and blocking checks before sealing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| GB-only labelling on goods for Northern Ireland | Importer in Northern Ireland | Market and CE documentation confirmed at booking | Importer / manufacturer |
| Annual tonnage return missing shipments | UK producer | Weight and chemistry recorded per shipment | Importer / producer |
Questions
Yes, for goods placed on the Northern Ireland market. Under the Windsor Framework the regulation has applied in Northern Ireland since 18 February 2024, with local enforcement under the Northern Ireland Regulations 2026.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Both now have a one-box arrangement with Dongguan MSA: Yantian since May 2026 and Nansha since 22 September 2026, so a container inspected at the factory need not be reopened at the terminal unless necessary. The choice then comes down to the carrier's service to your destination and the cut-offs; we compare both when you book.

We check carrier acceptance for Guangzhou → Derry before any booking, and ask for missing battery documents first.
