From Guangzhou to Gijón, cargo moves from the Pearl River Delta via Nansha, crosses a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and is discharged at the port of Gijón.

The Spanish side checks RII-PYA registration alongside the EU battery rules. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Dongguan–Nansha one-box
  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Spanish-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

How Guangzhou → Gijón differs from other lanes

Origin port

Guangzhou (Nansha)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo through Nansha, where a September 2026 agreement lets Dongguan-inspected containers load without a second MSA check, and where typhoon season runs June to October.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Guangzhou → Gijón route

They run from the Guangzhou terminal through the voyage to Gijón and the Spain import file.

  1. Origin port

Packaging certificate data now shared in Dongguan

Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA began sharing dangerous-goods packaging certificate data in September 2026, which they called a first in China, and agreed joint action on concealed and false declarations; Huangpu Customs runs a joint 'lithium batteries going overseas' service against misdeclaration as well. A mismatch between packaging certificate and MSA filing is visible to both.

What Anxin does: We check that the UN number, packaging code and quantities on the packaging certificate are exactly those on the MSA cargo report before either is submitted.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez is the likelier routing for Gijón

Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Gijón most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Gijón uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  3. Import country

Battery label from August 2026, QR code from February 2027

The Battery Regulation's general information label applies from 18 August 2026 (or 18 months after the label implementing act, if later), and every battery needs a QR code from 18 February 2027, linked to a battery passport for EV, LMT and industrial batteries above 2 kWh. Where the battery is too small, both go on the packaging and accompanying documents.

What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Spain importer to confirm the battery category and whether the label and QR-code elements are already on the goods, and compare carton photos with that answer.

  4. Import country

The truck leg out of Gijón runs under ADR

Road delivery from Gijón is an ADR movement, because the EU applies ADR to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. For UN 3480 that means class 9, transport category 2 and tunnel code (E), which restricts the route through category E tunnels; batteries found damaged at unloading move to special provision 376 packing (P908 or P911).

What Anxin does: We give the Spain haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Guangzhou.

  5. Import country

    Quarterly declarations include built-in batteries

Loose cells and batteries built into electrical equipment, removable or not, both fall under the Spanish register. Declarations are quarterly, errors can be corrected until 25 January of the following year, and changes to registration data must be updated within a month.

What Anxin does: When batteries travel inside devices we list battery quantity and chemistry separately on the packing list, so the importer can report them without reopening cartons.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Guangzhou → Gijón

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Guangzhou end

  • Packaging certificate and MSA cargo report cross-checked line by line (UN number, packaging code, quantity)
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable

Carrier and voyage

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

For import into Spain

  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates
  • RII-PYA registration number of the Spanish producer
  • Instructions and safety information in the language Spain requires

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Guangzhou filings, the carrier booking and the Spain import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Guangzhou → Gijón route

The CE marking on the battery and the manufacturer's EU declaration of conformity, which must be available in the language Spain requires. Both have applied since 18 August 2024.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Nansha MSA has recommended around 25% for ESS batteries and measures against accidental activation. Treat it as the local authority's recommendation; the carrier's own acceptance conditions also apply.
