Guangzhou to Kolkata
South China Sea · Malacca Strait · Andaman Sea · Bay of Bengal
This route runs through Guangzhou's Nansha terminals, which since September 2026 accept Dongguan-inspected battery boxes without a second check, then follows the Malacca Strait and then the Indian Ocean; at the far end is the port of Kolkata.
India adds BIS registration for lithium cells and batteries, checked online by customs. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.
What we need to start
Route profile
Pearl River Delta battery cargo through Nansha, where a September 2026 agreement lets Dongguan-inspected containers load without a second MSA check, and where typhoon season runs June to October.
India checks BIS registrations online, treats importers as EPR producers and wants the Bill of Entry early.

Where this route gets difficult
Listed from loading in Guangzhou to import into India, each with what we do about it.
The Hong Kong Observatory puts the region's tropical cyclone season from June to October, busiest July to September. Nansha sits at the mouth of the Pearl River; a closed gate or a changed vessel means the DG filings and the packing certificate have to follow the box to a new sailing.
What Anxin does: From June to October we leave slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off at Nansha and refile quickly if the vessel changes.
Nansha MSA told a July 2024 meeting on energy-storage carriage that ESS batteries should travel at roughly 25% state of charge, with accidental activation prevented. It is advice, not a binding rule, yet it is the number the local authority has put on the record.
What Anxin does: For ESS cargo leaving Nansha we ask the manufacturer to state the shipping state of charge and the anti-activation measures in writing, and put both in the documents the carrier sees.
Colombo is the main transhipment hub for Indian cargo: 8.29 million TEU in 2025, about 81% transhipment, around 45% of it India-linked. For Kolkata, a relay there means a second vessel whose DG acceptance matters as much as the first.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier at booking whether the service to Kolkata relays in Colombo or elsewhere, and check that the DG acceptance covers the feeder leg too.
Kolkata Dock System lies about 223 km from the pilot station, 148 km of it up the river, and the port publishes monthly draft forecasts; lock gates also limit ship size. Containers for Kolkata often come on smaller vessels, and draft can change the plan.
What Anxin does: We check the carrier's routing for Kolkata against the current draft forecast and tell the consignee if a relay is likely.
India requires lithium-ion cells and batteries to be registered under BIS's CRS (IS 16046 Part 2) before import. The registration number is declared in the Bill of Entry, so a missing or wrong number stops the container at Kolkata.
What Anxin does: Before booking we ask for the manufacturer's BIS R-number and check that it covers the models and factory named in the shipment.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Guangzhou export filings, the carrier booking and the India import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions
Yes. They fall under BIS's Compulsory Registration Scheme (IS 16046 Part 2), and the R-number is declared in the Bill of Entry.
The India Meteorological Department describes two North Indian Ocean seasons, April–May and October–December, the latter being the main one.
Nansha MSA has recommended around 25% for ESS batteries and measures against accidental activation. Treat it as the local authority's recommendation; the carrier's own acceptance conditions also apply.
