From Guangzhou to Piraeus, cargo moves through Guangzhou's Nansha terminals, which since September 2026 accept Dongguan-inspected battery boxes without a second check, crosses a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane, and is discharged at a port where the terminal system decides segregation and stacking for each class 9 box.
The Greek side adds EMPA registration to the EU battery rules. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.
What we need to start
Route profile
Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.
Dangerous goods notified to the terminal 24 hours before arrival with an IMDG multimodal form, then segregated and stacked by the terminal system.

Where this route gets difficult
Listed from loading in Guangzhou to import into Greece, each with what we do about it.
The tropical cyclone season in the region runs from June to October according to the Hong Kong Observatory, with July to September the busiest months. At Nansha, on the Pearl River mouth, a gate closure or a vessel change sends the DG filings and the packing certificate after the box to its new sailing.
What Anxin does: From June to October we leave slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off at Nansha and refile quickly if the vessel changes.
Since 22 September 2026 Guangzhou MSA accepts Dongguan MSA's factory inspection for boxes loading at Nansha and re-inspects only when necessary. The first container was stuffed in Dongguan that day and left Nansha for Singapore on 24 September. Because the arrangement is new at Nansha, the factory record needs to be correct the first time.
What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your Dongguan factory can use the Nansha one-box arrangement and make sure the stuffing photos, packing certificate and DG declaration match, because a mismatch is the 'necessary' case that brings the second inspection back.
Because Piraeus is an EU port, container ships of 5,000 GT or more calling there fall under the EU Emissions Trading System, which covers half the emissions of the voyage from China. Lines surrendered allowances for 70% of those emissions in 2025 and must cover 100% from 2027, a cost that can reach shippers as a surcharge.
What Anxin does: We ask for the emissions surcharge to be shown as its own line in the quote, with the basis the carrier uses, so that successive quotes can be compared like for like.
After checking the file, PCT loads the dangerous goods records into its CATOS system, which decides safety checks, segregation and where a unit may be stacked. A box whose data change after arrival has to go through that process again, which matters most for containers transhipped at Piraeus.
What Anxin does: We avoid changing DG data after departure; if a correction is needed, it goes to the carrier before the vessel reaches Piraeus.
The importer in Greece carries the check: CE marking on the battery and an EU declaration of conformity, translated into the language Greece asks for, have both been required since 18 August 2024 for batteries entering the EU market.
What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer in China for the declaration of conformity and a photo of the CE marking on the battery or its packaging before loading, and pass them to the Greece importer. We check that the documents exist and match the goods; we do not assess conformity.

Documents & compliance
Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Guangzhou filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Greece before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Piraeus.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second inspection at Nansha because factory records are incomplete | Dongguan factory → Nansha | Photos, packing certificate and declaration matched before trucking | Anxin |
| Typhoon closure after filings are made | Nansha, Jun–Oct | Slack in stuffing date; prompt refiling | Anxin with the declarant |
| Emissions surcharge changes between quote and sailing | EU port call | Surcharge shown as a separate line | Carrier, checked by Anxin |
| Declaration of conformity missing or not in the required language | Importer in Greece | Declaration and CE photo collected before loading | Manufacturer / importer |
Questions
24 hours before the container is loaded in China, not before it reaches Piraeus. Without it carriers do not load the box, and a filing without an EORI number is rejected.
Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.
Both now have a one-box arrangement with Dongguan MSA: Yantian since May 2026 and Nansha since 22 September 2026, so a container inspected at the factory need not be reopened at the terminal unless necessary. The choice then comes down to the carrier's service to your destination and the cut-offs; we compare both when you book.
