Lithium batteries for Prince Rupert go from the Pearl River Delta via Nansha. On the way they face a North Pacific crossing with no chokepoint but real winter-storm exposure, and they arrive at the port of Prince Rupert.

Canada adds an eManifest that closes 24 hours before loading and a CARM account that decides whether goods are released before duty is paid. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Nansha export
  • Dongguan–Nansha one-box
  • CARM account
  • Bilingual labels
  • eManifest cut-off

Route profile

How Guangzhou → Prince Rupert differs from other lanes

Origin port

Guangzhou (Nansha)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo through Nansha, where a September 2026 agreement lets Dongguan-inspected containers load without a second MSA check, and where typhoon season runs June to October.

Sea corridor

Transpacific (North Pacific)

A great-circle route across the North Pacific, exposed to hurricane-force winter storms from October to April.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Guangzhou → Prince Rupert route

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Prince Rupert and the Canada market.

  1. Origin port

A recommended 25% charge for ESS from Nansha

Nansha MSA told a July 2024 meeting on energy-storage carriage that ESS batteries should travel at roughly 25% state of charge, with accidental activation prevented. It is advice, not a binding rule, yet it is the number the local authority has put on the record.

What Anxin does: For ESS cargo leaving Nansha we ask the manufacturer to state the shipping state of charge and the anti-activation measures in writing, and put both in the documents the carrier sees.

  2. Origin port

    One-box inspection now reaches Nansha

Since 22 September 2026 Guangzhou MSA accepts Dongguan MSA's factory inspection for boxes loading at Nansha and re-inspects only when necessary. The first container was stuffed in Dongguan that day and left Nansha for Singapore on 24 September. Because the arrangement is new at Nansha, the factory record needs to be correct the first time.

What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your Dongguan factory can use the Nansha one-box arrangement and make sure the stuffing photos, packing certificate and DG declaration match, because a mismatch is the 'necessary' case that brings the second inspection back.

  3. Sea corridor

An open-ocean crossing where weather is the main risk

From Guangzhou the drawn corridor to Prince Rupert runs across the North Pacific without a canal or Red Sea passage, so weather replaces chokepoints as the risk. The ONE Apus, bound from Yantian to Long Beach in November 2020, had a stack collapse in a storm about 1,600 nautical miles north-west of Hawaii; her owners said more than 1,900 containers could be lost or damaged, up to 40 of them hazmat.

What Anxin does: For winter sailings especially, we review blocking and bracing on stuffing photos against the CINS points before sealing, and make sure the DG declaration is complete, so a damaged box can be identified and handled correctly.

  4. Import country

Every DG shipment through Prince Rupert is pre-approved

The Prince Rupert Port Authority requires all dangerous goods moving through the port to be pre-approved through its online permit application, and the move goes ahead only once the approving authority has confirmed by email.

What Anxin does: We send the carrier's agent the full DG list for the container well before arrival at Prince Rupert, so the permit is confirmed before the ship berths.

  5. Import country

A late eManifest correction restarts the 24-hour clock

Canada's advance commercial information rules want container data from the carrier 24 hours before loading abroad. Change the data electronically before the ship sails and the 24 hours run again from the CBSA's acknowledgement, which is how a correction made in Guangzhou can cost a container its sailing.

What Anxin does: We send the carrier the final cargo description, UN number, weights and consignee details before the cut-off in Guangzhou and avoid amendments after the filing.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Guangzhou → Prince Rupert

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

In Guangzhou, before the box is loaded

  • For ESS: written shipping state of charge and anti-activation measures from the manufacturer
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Bilingual (English/French) retail labelling checked on artwork
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report

Carrier and voyage

  • Stuffing photos before, during and after packing, checked for blocking and bracing
  • Final cargo data with the carrier before the eManifest cut-off; no amendments after filing
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type

For import into Canada

  • Importer's CARM account and release-prior-to-payment security confirmed
  • English DG documents with a 24-hour number for the Canadian road leg

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Guangzhou filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Canada before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Prince Rupert.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Guangzhou → Prince Rupert route

Yes. TDG s. 9.3 allows IMDG documentation and marks for an international consignment going to or from a port, provided the document is legible in English or French and carries a 24-hour number.

Weather is the main risk on this crossing: NOAA recorded hurricane-force North Pacific storms from October to April, most often in December. We tighten the packing checks for those sailings.

Nansha MSA has recommended around 25% for ESS batteries and measures against accidental activation. Treat it as the local authority's recommendation; the carrier's own acceptance conditions also apply.
