This route runs out of Nansha, at the mouth of the Pearl River, then follows a long voyage ending in the North Atlantic or the Gulf of St Lawrence; at the far end is the port of Charlottetown.

Canadian clearance depends on eManifest data filed before loading and on the importer's CARM set-up. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Nansha export
  • Dongguan–Nansha one-box
  • Bilingual labels
  • eManifest cut-off
  • CARM account

Route profile

How Guangzhou → Charlottetown differs from other lanes

Origin port

Guangzhou (Nansha)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo through Nansha, where a September 2026 agreement lets Dongguan-inspected containers load without a second MSA check, and where typhoon season runs June to October.

Import country

Canada

An eManifest filed 24 hours before loading, release-before-payment only with CARM security, and TDG conditions on the truck leg.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Guangzhou → Charlottetown shipments get held up: 5 points

They run from the Guangzhou terminal through the voyage to Charlottetown and the Canada import file.

  1. Origin port

Nansha MSA's state-of-charge advice for energy storage

At a July 2024 meeting on energy-storage carriage, Nansha MSA recommended shipping ESS batteries at a state of charge of around 25% and preventing accidental activation. It is a recommendation rather than a fixed rule, but it is the figure the local authority has put on record.

What Anxin does: For ESS cargo leaving Nansha we ask the manufacturer to state the shipping state of charge and the anti-activation measures in writing, and put both in the documents the carrier sees.

  2. Origin port

Typhoon weeks at the Pearl River mouth

The Hong Kong Observatory puts the region's tropical cyclone season from June to October, busiest July to September. Nansha sits at the mouth of the Pearl River; a closed gate or a changed vessel means the DG filings and the packing certificate have to follow the box to a new sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we leave slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off at Nansha and refile quickly if the vessel changes.

  3. Sea corridor

North Atlantic winter storms peak in January

NOAA's Ocean Prediction Center has recorded hurricane-force mid-latitude storms in the North Atlantic from October to April, most often in January. The final leg to Charlottetown crosses those waters.

What Anxin does: For winter sailings we check blocking and bracing on stuffing photos before sealing.

  4. Import country

IMDG papers work on the road leg, with Canadian conditions

TDG Regulations s. 9.3 let an international consignment move by road to or from Charlottetown under IMDG classification, marks, labels and documents. The shipping document must still be legible in English or French and show a 24-hour telephone number, and a container must carry placards under TDG Part 4 or the IMDG Code.

What Anxin does: We check that the DG declaration is in English, carries a 24-hour number that the consignee has arranged and matches the container's placards before the documents go to the Canadian trucker.

  5. Import country

Release before payment needs security posted in CARM

Since the CARM transition ended on 20 May 2025, importers without financial security posted in the CARM Client Portal no longer get release prior to payment; they pay duties and taxes when the goods are released. For a first shipment through Charlottetown, that decides whether goods can leave the terminal before the duty is settled.

What Anxin does: At quotation we ask the Canada importer whether its CARM account has security posted for release prior to payment, so the broker's release plan is known before the ship arrives.

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Guangzhou filings, the carrier booking and the Canada import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Guangzhou → Charlottetown: questions we are asked

At least 24 hours before loading in China. If the data are amended electronically before the ship sails, the 24 hours restart from the CBSA's acknowledgement.

Yes, but the Coast Guard's icebreaking season on the Gulf of St Lawrence and the river typically runs from December to May, and vessels must report their ice class to ECAREG CANADA. We confirm the vessel's ice capability when booking.

Nansha MSA has recommended around 25% for ESS batteries and measures against accidental activation. Treat it as the local authority's recommendation; the carrier's own acceptance conditions also apply.
