Lithium batteries for Aqaba go from Liaoning through Dalian's Dayaowan terminals. On the way they face an approach through Bab-el-Mandeb into one of the world's warmest seas, and they arrive at Aqaba, where the DG arrival declaration and MSDS reach the terminal a day before the ship.

On the Jordanian side the importer needs an importer's card, or pays a customs bond, before goods clear. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Winter ice & spring fog
  • Dalian Dayaowan export
  • Importer's card (Jordan)
  • Arabic translation of the invoice
  • DG arrival declaration + MSDS 24 h before arrival

Route profile

How Dalian → Aqaba differs from other lanes

Origin port

Dalian (Dayaowan)

North-east China's battery gateway at Dayaowan, with a small but growing lithium export flow, a local MSA that has named misdeclaration as its main problem, and both winter ice and spring fog.

Sea corridor

Asia – Red Sea & Gulf of Aden

The drawn corridor enters the Red Sea through Bab-el-Mandeb, where Saudi-linked shipping was being threatened in September 2026, and ends in one of the warmest seas in the world.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Dalian → Aqaba shipments get held up: 5 points

Listed from loading in Dalian to import into Jordan, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

    Winter sea ice near Dayaowan

The Bohai Sea and the northern Yellow Sea freeze every winter. For 2021/22 China's marine forecast centre expected floating ice around 15 nautical miles offshore in the northern Yellow Sea, where Dayaowan is, and around 60 in Liaodong Bay, with the peak between mid-January and mid-February.

What Anxin does: For January–February sailings from Dalian we allow extra time between stuffing and the DG cut-off and reconfirm the vessel schedule the week before loading.

  2. Origin port

Dalian's MSA says misdeclared battery cargo is common

According to Dayaowan MSA in April 2024, lithium battery cargo was often under-declared or misdeclared because the rules are complicated. It responded with a dedicated desk and hotline, priority for EV batteries, and AI-based document comparison intended to reduce container openings, which means any mismatch between the declaration and its supporting papers gets flagged.

What Anxin does: We reconcile the UN number, classification, packing group, quantity and SDS across every document before filing, which is exactly what an automated comparison will test.

  3. Sea corridor

Shade and distance from heat on the last leg

The last leg to Aqaba runs through one of the world's warmest seas, and China MSA guidance asks for battery containers stowed on deck to be shaded from direct sun and kept clear of heat sources.

What Anxin does: We put the stowage request (shaded, away from heat) on the booking and in the DG declaration remarks.

  4. Destination port

Trucks on standby if direct delivery is assigned

For Aqaba, the terminal receives the DG arrival declaration and MSDS 24 hours ahead and then allocates each box to yard storage, direct delivery or the security committee; direct delivery means trucks in place two hours before the crane reaches the bay.

What Anxin does: We send the SDS with the DG declaration at booking and tell the importer to have trucks and its clearance agent ready in case Aqaba assigns direct delivery.

  5. Import country

Registered importer with an importer's card

Commercial imports into Jordan need a registered trader; trading companies either hold the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply importer's card or put up a customs bond against the goods' value.

What Anxin does: At booking we ask the Jordanian buyer whether it holds an importer's card and which authorised forwarding agent will clear the container at Aqaba.

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Dalian filings, the carrier booking and the Jordan import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Dalian → Aqaba: questions we are asked

No, but the importer must provide an Arabic translation, and only an authorised forwarding agent can file the electronic customs declaration.

The JMIC rated the Gulf of Aden SUBSTANTIAL in September 2026, with piracy and attacks a strong possibility, and four merchant vessels hijacked off Somalia in 2026 were still held. We confirm the carrier's routing and security surcharges at each booking.

Sea ice forms every winter in the northern Yellow Sea; in 2021/22 it was forecast to reach about 15 nautical miles out there, peaking mid-January to mid-February. We plan extra time for those weeks.
